Clinical Trial Web Dashboard

Unified web-based dashboard streamlining data visualization across diverse clinical trials.

Objective:

Design a unified web-based dashboard that integrates data across various clinical trial applications, ranging from in-clinic tablet surveys to at-home smartwatch assessments.

Context and Challenge:

Prior to this project, our company delivered clinical trial data either in batch CSV reports or via project-specific dashboards. The challenge was to develop a single, modular real-time data visualization dashboard that could accommodate data from all current and future projects while being compatible with the existing backend architecture.

My Role:

As the lead designer, I was responsible for:

  • Collaborating closely with engineers to grasp the technical nuances of our systems.

  • Mapping out existing study types, application scheduling systems, and data inputs from various studies.

  • Creating a design system.

  • Designing mid and high-fidelity mockups.

Research and Data Compilation:

Conducted interviews with engineers to understand the technical background and history of past projects.

Mapped out all study types and current data inputs.

User Research:

Interviewed three distinct user groups to gather insights into their needs and challenges.

Analyzed interview data to identify common patterns and pain points.

User interview notes organized into cards and sorted into themes.

Persona and User Journey Development:

Created user personas based on research data.

Developed a user story map to visualize the different user roles and their interactions with the dashboard.

Design Process:

Developed a site map and information architecture to organize the content and features of the dashboard.

Created wireframes to lay out the basic structure of the user interface.

Established a design system to ensure consistency and scalability of the dashboard’s visual and functional elements.

High-Fidelity Design:

Finalized the design and oversaw the development of the website.

Outcome and Impact

The dashboard has been operational for over three years, successfully integrating and visualizing data across multiple clinical trials. It has become an essential tool for our users, providing them with immediate insights and significantly improving data accessibility. Continuous feedback from users has been incorporated to refine and enhance the dashboard over time.

Conclusion

This case study not only highlights my capabilities in designing complex, scalable web systems but also demonstrates my commitment to iterative improvement and user-centered design in a clinical setting.
